Hyundai announced that the Ioniq 5 N — the nameplate’s all-electric, all-wheel-drive, high-performance variant — has proven its mettle by conquering extreme arctic environment.
According to the South Korean automotive brand, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was put through its paces at the Hyundai Mobis Proving Ground in Arjeplog, Sweden.
The facility — given its position adjacent to the Arctic Circle — offers everything an automaker needs for comprehensive winter testing, such as low-grip coefficient icy surfaces and deep sub-zero temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius.
Using this location gives Hyundai’s engineers the right conditions to test models like the Ioniq 5 N electric vehicle (EV) in the most extreme low friction conditions to achieve the optimal balance between the car’s responsive “fun-to-drive” character and its ability to perform safely and predictably in sub-zero conditions.
“Just as our N models are honed at the sharp corners of the Nürburgring, our N models are also honed at the sharp corners and icy surfaces of our proving ground in Arjeplog, ensuring maximum performance in the most extreme winter conditions. We’re proud to demonstrate the Ioniq 5 N perfectly meets our broad performance criteria, ensuring N Brand success as our first EV production N model,” said Hyundai Motor Company N Brand Management and Motorsport Division Vice President Till Wartenberg.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N combines the brand’s Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with its N division’s motorsport-bred technologies and expertise to raise the bar for electrified high performance and set the stage for what is sure to become the true driving enthusiast’s choice for a year-round performance EV.
N brand engineers, Hyundai explained, optimized E-GMP’s dual-motor architecture for high-performance driving in all conditions with know-how transfer of all-surface all-wheel-drive capabilities demonstrated by the Hyundai i20 N WRC Rally 1 car in Sweden.
It will have an all-wheel-drive system, an electronic-Limited Slip Differential (e-LSD) system, the N Drift Optimizer, and N Torque Distribution.
Together, the abovementioned features give the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N improved corner-carving capability, a dedicated driving mode for drifting, and enhanced grip.
“Our electric transition was spearheaded by the race-proven Veloster N ETCR and we sought to bridge motorsport technology to the road with the RN22e. Now it is time to bring all this promise to our beloved customers and I am confident Ioniq 5 N will be able to deliver. We’ve been able to demonstrate Ioniq 5 N’s capability to provide driving fun even in the harshest conditions of Arjeplog, Sweden,” commented Hyundai Motor Group Executive Technical Advisor Albert Biermann.
