The local arm of the Korean car giant Hyundai just became the first brand in the Philippines to have its full lineup of modern jeepneys meet Philippine National Standards (PNS).

This after Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) received their latest Certificate of Compliance (COC) from the Department of Transportation for the HD50S Class 3 Modern Jeepney.

Earlier, the vehicle maker already received COCs for the Hyundai H-100 Class 1 and Hyundai HD50S Class 2 as early as last year.

Introduced February this year, the Hyundai HD50S Class 3 Modern Jeepney has a 2.9-liter Euro 4-compliant CRDi engine with a 3.5 meter wheelbase.

Aside from that, it has also been fitted features designed to provide comfort and safety for public commuters such as roof-mounted air conditioning, AFCS, Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, seven-inch monitor, and speed limiter.

The Hyundai HD50S Class 3 Modern Jeepney is set to accommodate 22 seated passengers, with room for 10 standing.

HARI President and CEO Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo noted the need to modernize the public transportation.

“The pandemic has stressed the need to modernize and fortify public transport in the country. Using our modern jeepney platforms, we were the first to roll out Ligtas Biyahe (COVID-ready) variants that were utilized and proven effective in the government’s Libreng Sakay for front liners. We need to reach a critical mass so we can keep the majority, if not all, of the riding public safe and secure,” the HARI chief said.

These Hyundai Modern Jeepney’s Ligtas Biyahe variants come with features that promote new normal safety protocols such as contactless payments, social distancing with individualized seating, and plastic dividers.

The modern jeepney offerings garnered orders from transport groups, private companies and LGUs since it was launched back in 2020.

“Filipinos require more mass mobility options to get to their workplaces, get essentials, and to reach out to their families in these trying times. Gradually and with stricter protocols, public transport capacity must be increased to revive the economy. We strongly believe that Hyundai Modern Jeepneys can be part of that solution,” Agudo concluded.
