Hyundai Santa Fe: The old vs. the new

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the South Korean carmaker’s upscale entry in the local SUV segment. It was introduced in 2018 at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) alongside the Veloster, the Kona, and the Ioniq Hybrid.

It’s now on its fourth generation with a face-lifted model — currently available in other markets — and should hit local dealerships sooner than later. That said, let’s look at how it compares to Hyundai Philippines’ current Santa Fe.

Exterior styling

One of the obvious differences between the old and the new Santa Fe is the exterior styling. While both the old and the new Santa Fe feature Hyundai’s cascading grille, the face-lifted version noticeably has a larger one compared to the OG model.

The newer model also features a T-shaped headlamp as well as the rear lamps with a long LED strip running across the width of the car. Wider wheel arches are also fitted on the side profile to accommodate the larger 20-inch wheels.

Car tech

The base model of the refreshed Santa Fe features an eight-inch head unit which is still larger than the seven-inch display screen on the top-spec Santa Fe currently offered in the Philippines. Nevertheless, both are compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The new Hyundai Santa Fe also has a redesigned center stack that features a larger push-button gear selector and a new gear drive mode selector.

Powertrain

The face-lifted Santa Fe is offered in three powertrain options: gasoline, hybrid, and diesel. The Santa Fe currently offered by Hyundai Philippines uses the brand’s 2.2 CRDi e-VGT mill mated to an eight-speed automatic tranny.
