Hyundai to release 13 new EV models using new architecture

Hyundai Motor Group revealed that it will be releasing 13 new electric vehicles (EV) using its second-generation electric car platform, dubbed the Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA).

The said 13 new models will be spread among Hyundai Motor Group-owned brands such as Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis through 2030.

For years, the company’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) has served as the backbone for the South Korean carmaker’s notable electric models such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, both of which are currently available here in the Philippines.

With IMA, the conglomerate stated its plan to standardize modules and parts between the models to further expand economies of scale and significantly reduce EV development complexity and costs.

In Hyundai Motor Group’s existing system, automotive parts can only be shared among vehicles that share the same platform. However, with the IMA development system, over 80 common modules can be utilized across different segments — the consortium explained.

The said breakthrough allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in the development process, paving the way for significant cost savings.

“In the second-generation platform, the scope of vehicle development extends beyond the mid-sized SUVs (sport utility vehicles) covered by the current E-GMP system. It encompasses nearly all vehicle classes, ranging from small and large SUVs to pickup trucks, along with the flagship models of the Genesis brand,” Hyundai Motor Group wrote in a press release.

Under the IMA platform, Hyundai Motor Group looks to apply a range of battery solutions, including next-generation nickel-cobalt-manganese and lithium iron phosphate batteries.

To further extend the driving range, Hyundai Motor intends to implement cutting-edge technology that enables battery charging and discharging while driving, utilizing an independent power bank.

In addition, the integration of an AI-based battery management system will ensure real-time monitoring and diagnosis of battery conditions, ensuring enhanced safety by preventing thermal runaway.

Hyundai Motor Group also aims to build an app ecosystem and controller integration for its automobiles (probably like the Kia Connect Store available for the Kia EV9), which will be compatible with the IMA platform. Planned features for the said app ecosystem include Level 3 and higher autonomous driving capabilities, high-performance semiconductors, and over-the-air update advancements.

The forthcoming 13 EV models and the firm’s new IMA platform were announced during Hyundai Motor Group’s 2023 CEO Investor Day.

During the event, Hyundai Motor Group also discussed and laid the corporation’s accelerated electrification and future mobility goals such as its plan to boost Hyundai’s annual EV sales goal to two million units by 2030 and its aim to accelerate its transition toward becoming a smart mobility solution by investing KRW 109.4 trillion (approximately P4.669 billion) in the next 10 years, among others.

As it originated from Pony, the Ioniq 5 N — a high-performance EV scheduled for unveiling in July — will embrace and carry forward the enduring heritage of Hyundai Motor Company,” Hyundai Motor Group President and Chief Executive Jaehoon Chang said during the forum.
