Although Honda has built Civic models in America since 1986, this year will be the first time Honda will build a Civic hatchback in the US — specifically at the automotive brand’s Indiana Auto Plant (IAP) in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Honda said that it has invested at least US$50.2 million to help IAP prepare for the mass production of the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback. Part of the investment includes a building expansion for laser brazing technology for the roof of the brand-new hatch.
The IAP plant has also increased the use of high-performance structural adhesives which improve body rigidity. Application of acoustic spray foam to the 2022 Civic hatchback’s body, for enhanced cabin quietness, is also said to be one of the latest processes added to the Greensburg plant.
“We are proud the Indiana Auto Plant has been chosen to lead production in North America for an all-new model like the 2022 Civic hatchback that is playing an increasingly important role in the US market. Being selected to build the Civic hatchback speaks to the experienced workforce we have here in Indiana, and highlights the confidence Honda has in our associates to build the quality cars and light trucks our customers love,” said IAP Plant Lead Larry Geise.
The all-new 2022 Civic hatchback features a Euro-inspired coupe-like body with increased versatility and sportier driving character. Honda’s latest hot hatch is aimed at young, active buyers.
It is available in six variants with prices ranging from US$22,900 to US$29,400.
