After its Libreng Sakay (Free Ride) program lasted until December 31, 2022, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that commuters will now have to pay fare when using the EDSA (Epifanio delos Santos Avenue) Busway.

Per LTFRB, some 550 public utility buses from the consortia may operate in the EDSA Busway to serve commuters.In a Facebook post, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said that the buses in the aforementioned public transport system have started operating under the fare box scheme using the approved matrix effective January 1, 2023.
The transport regulating agency said that some 550 public utility buses (PUB) from the consortia may operate in the EDSA Busway to provide service to the public.
Further, the LTFRB said that other point-to-point buses from the consortia on the EDSA Busway will be replaced by units that meet the specifications of other PUB units on the aforementioned route. Those that are to be replaced must apply for a special permit before plying the EDSA Busway, the agency noted.
The LTFRB shared that all PUB units that will ply the EDSA Busway must have the fare guide to be allowed to charge fares to passengers accordingly.

Lastly, the organization is reminding PUB drivers to follow the guidelines that the agency issued to ensure the safety and security of passengers. Those who will be caught violating the LTFRB-released policies will be subject to penalties such as cancellation of Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC) or franchise.
Earlier, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista revealed plans of privatizing the EDSA (Epifanio delos Santos Avenue) Busway.
