Jeep unveils 5th-gen Grand Cherokee

Jeep unveils the fifth-gen Grand Cherokee soon after its announcement earlier this week.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will be leading the Jeep brand into a new era of premium refinement, innovative technology, advanced 4x4 capability, and electrification. With a perfect balance of on-road dynamics, 4x4 capability, and 4xe performance, the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most technologically advanced, luxurious, and 4x4-capable Grand Cherokee ever,” says Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer, Christian Meunier.

Its latest iteration has been redesigned to deliver even more of what has made the Grand Cherokee a true global icon in the premium SUV segment.

Outside, the latest Grand Cherokee model sports a wider seven-slot grille with as well as active grille shutters, front-wheel spats, air curtains, hood aero flick, a lowered roofline, and rear vertical-pillar spoilers.

The interior boasts of an all-new seating architecture with an adjustable cushion, power lumbar, and memory features for the front row passengers.

Its front panel features HVAC vents, 10.1-inch digital screens, as well as a segment-first 10.25-inch front passenger interactive display, and a new high-definition rear-seat entertainment system with FireTV built-in.

Safety-wise, the 2022 Grand Cherokee comes with a full-speed collision warning with active braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection, rear cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control, active lane management, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring, a rear camera, rear parking sensors, and a switch-activated park brake among others.

Optional safety features are available such as night vision camera with pedestrian and animal detection, intersection collision assist, drowsy driver detection system, parallel and perpendicular park assist, and the 360-degree surround-view camera.

Part of the 2022 Grand Cherokee’s lineup is the highly-anticipated plug-in hybrid variant — the Grand Cherokee 4xe.

It packs a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged engine mated to a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The electrified SUV also sports a high-voltage, liquid-cooled motor-generator unit, and a 400-volt, 17-kWh EV battery. This setup makes 375 horses.

According to Jeep, the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe has an estimated 25 miles (40km) of all-electric range, returns an estimated 57 MPGe, and has an estimated total range of more than 440 miles (708km).

It will also be accompanied by “E Selec modes” including Hybrid, Electric, and eSave.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe driver can tailor its hybrid powertrain to suit each trip, from daily commuting in pure-electric mode to extended highway road trips with no range anxiety, allowing owners to explore nature off-road in near silence. This is another important step toward achieving our global vision of Zero Emission Freedom. By 2025, we plan to offer a fully electric Jeep vehicle in every SUV segment,” Meunier commented.

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, on the other hand, aims to elevate the nameplate’s 4x4 capabilities even further.

It features standard all-terrain tires, integrated off-road camera, Quadra-Lift air suspension with up to 11.3 inches (28.7cm) of ground clearance, improved approach, departure and break-over angles, and the Quadra-Drive II active transfer case with rear eLSD and Selec-Terrain.

Powering the 2022 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This arrangement produces 293 horses.

Jeep also offers a 5.7-liter V-8 option available only on the 2022 Grand Cherokee’s Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve variants.
