In a recent press release, Kia has announced the upcoming launch of the 2022 Sorento Turbo Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) in the US, expanding the South Korean carmaker’s current SUV lineup.
The new Sorento PHEV will also contribute to the automotive brand’s ambitious "Plan S" electrification strategy which sets Kia on a path to establish a full EV line-up of 11 models and reach a 6.6-percent global EV market share by 2025.
“The Sorento PHEV’s rare combination of drivability, efficiency, and spaciousness will make it a compelling choice for our customers. We’re proud to have it join the popular Sorento model range while also playing a pivotal role in the launch of Kia’s Plan S electrification strategy,” said Kia North America and Kia America President and CEO Sean Yoon.
Kia says that the Sorento PHEV will be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine with a 66.9kW electric motor. The hybrid powerplant will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This setup puts out a combined maximum power output of 261hp.
The Sorento PHEV will be built around the brand’s N3 platform providing the hybrid SUV with improved driving dynamics, ride and handling, and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). The N3 platform also increases the Sorento PHEV’s wheelbase by 1.4 inches and improves its tensile strength by four percent over the previous-generation Sorento.
While customers can expect to see the same sharp, modern lines, and high-tech details from the 2022 Sorento PHEV, Kia says that the new SUV will feature specialized rear badging and will ride on 19-inch wheels. The plug port located at the rear quarter panel separates the PHEV model from its internal combustion cousins.
Inside, the plug-in Sorento will feature a standard three-row seating with second-row captain chairs. The seats will come in Syntex synthetic leather as standard while perforated leather seats can be had as an optional add-on.
In addition, the Sorento PHEV SUV will feature a 12.3-inch full digital meter cluster, a 10.25-inch high-resolution color touchscreen display with navigation and telematics, a wireless smartphone charging pad, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bose premium sound system with 12 speakers.
Kia also packed the 2022 Sorento PHEV with advanced driver-assist systems including blind-spot collision avoidance assist, driver attention warning (DAW), forward collision warning (FAW), forward collision-avoidance assist (FCA), highway driving assist (HDA), intelligent speed limit assist (ISLA), lane following assist (LFA), navigation-based smart cruise control (NSCC-C), parking distance warning-reverse (PDW-R), rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist (RCCA), and safe exit assist (SEA).
Kia says that the Sorento PHEV will be built in its Hwasung, Korea plant alongside the Sorento HEV. The 2022 Sorento Turbo PHEV will arrive in US showrooms in the third quarter of 2021 where it will be offered in two trims: SX and SX-P.
Pricing is yet to be announced.
