Kia leads mass market brands in 2023 JD Power Dependability Survey

Kia is the most dependable mass-market automotive brand in the United States, according to the 2023 JD Power Dependability Study.

In a statement, the data analytics company shared that the Korean automotive marque had a score of 152 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), maintaining its lead over other mass market marques for the third straight year.

Following Kia are Buick (159 PP100), Chevrolet (162 PP100), Mitsubishi (167 PP100) and Toyota (168 PP100).

To note, the overall top brand in the study is Lexus, which is Toyota's luxury branch.

As explained by J.D. Power, the study examines how 2020 model-year vehicles are currently performing in terms of quality, component replacement and appeal — including those with new technology. The study is also aimed at helping automotive manufacturers create better vehicles to stand the test of time and promote higher resale value. A lower PP100 indicates higher performance.

Kia, which is under the Hyundai Motor Group, received three segment awards coming from the Forte, Optima and Sportage.

The aforementioned research covers 184 specific problem areas within nine major vehicle categories namely climate; driving assistance; driving experience; exterior; features, controls, and displays; infotainment; interior; powertrain; as well as seats.

The 2023 J.D. Power US Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 30,062 original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded from August up to November last year.
