The Kia Picanto is the South Korean carmaker’s entry to the hot hatch segment in the country. To compete against other segment staples, Kia packed the Picanto with features that make it appealing to a wide segment of Filipino car buyers.
Outside is a pair of projector headlamps and front fog lamps that flank the silver-trimmed front grille. In addition, it features body-colored front and rear bumpers, a rear spoiler, rear combination lamps, and a high-mount stop lamp.
Inside, owners will find an instrument cluster with a 2.6-inch digital display and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system (EX variants).
Power comes from either a 1.0-liter or a 1.2-liter engine mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. The Kia Picanto can produce anywhere between 66 to 62 horses with 95 to 122Nm of torque.
Safety is provided by a set of airbags and seatbelts with ABS and immobilizer only available for the upper variants.
Speaking of which, Kia Philippines is offering the Kia Picanto in four variants: the LX MT, LX AT, EX MT, and EX AT. They are priced at P590,000, P635,000, P700,000, and P745,000 respectively.
Car buyers with a similar budget could also opt for something else, like what we have next.
The Toyota Wigo is another option for those shopping for hatchbacks within the P500,000 to P700,000 mark.
The Wigo’s exterior features projector halogen headlamps, line guide-type clearance lamps, front fog lamps, rear combination lamps, and a rear spoiler-integrated stop lamp.
A TRD variant of the Toyota Wigo is also available which adds a sporty front spoiler, side skirts, a rear skirt, a two-tone rear spoiler, TRD decals, and a TRD badge.
Inside, you get an instrument cluster with analog and digital meters as well as a touchscreen display audio that doubles as a monitor for the rear camera.
Under the hood is a 1.0-liter engine mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. It produces a total of 65 horses with 89Nm of torque.
When it comes to safety, the Toyota Wigo comes with SRS airbags, ABS, and a back sonar across the board. The higher trim levels get a back camera with a digital recorder, an anti-theft system, and a wireless door lock.
The Toyota Wigo is currently offered in four variants, the 1.0 E MT (P568,000), the G MT (P623,000), the G AT (P658,000), and the TRD S AT (P700,000).
Last but not least is the Mitsubishi Mirage. This hot Japanese hatch features multi-reflector halogen multi-reflector headlights flanking its front grille as well as and bulb-type combination lamps at the rear.
Inside is a multi-faceted instrument cluster and a multi-media system that can play music via a tuner, USB, iPod, Aux-in, and Bluetooth.
The hood hides a 1.2-liter powerplant mated to either a five-speed manual or a CVT.
In terms of safety, the Mitsubishi Mirage features a suite of seatbelts and airbags.
The Mitsubishi Mirage is offered in two variants: a 1.2-liter manual and a 1.2-liter CVT priced at P704,000 and P765,000 respectively.
