The Kia Sportage is one of the South Korean car brand’s entries to the local compact SUV segment. The fifth-gen Sportage has been unveiled in other markets and it’s only a matter of time before it hits Philippine shores.
That said, let’s look at what separates the new from the old.
Let’s begin with the exterior. The old Kia Sportage features a mix of circular and angular aesthetics. At the front is the tiger-nose grille flanked by either halogen or LED headlamps. At the back are rear combination lamps that can either come in standard bulbs or LED depending on the variant.
The new Sportage gets a larger and a more stretched tiger-nose grille. They are paired with boomerang-like headlamps with DRLs on each side. At the rear is a notch-shaped taillight that echoes the angular aesthetic of the compact SUV’s front end.
Owners won’t have a hard time telling which is which from the inside as the old Sportage comes with slightly dated features like an instrument panel with a 3.5-inch LCD display and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The new Sportage wows with a futuristic driver cockpit which can be had with a dual panoramic curved display that seamlessly connects two 12.3-inch screens with one acting as the instrument cluster and the other the infotainment system.
The old Sportage can either be powered by a 2.0-liter gasoline engine or a 2.0-liter diesel mill. The gasoline engine puts out 153hp while its diesel counterpart has a maximum power output of 182hp.
The new Sportage (US spec) is powered by a 2.5-liter engine and is also offered with a hybrid powertrain.
In terms of safety, the old Sportage comes with ABS, stability control, downhill brake control, hill-start assist, as well as cruise control, parking distance warning, and a rear camera.
The new Sportage comes with a host of safety features like blind-spot collision avoidance-assist (BCA), rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist (RCCA), and navigation-based smart cruise control-curve (NSCC-C) among others.
Kia has made no announcement when they will introduce the fifth-gen Sportage to the local subcompact SUV segment. As of the moment, the Kia Sportage in the Philippines is offered in three variants: the gasoline-powered LX and the diesel-powered LX and GT. These models are priced at P1,290,000, P1,545,000, and P1,820,000 respectively.
