Less is more: Mini bares ‘Charismatic Simplicity’ design language for future EV models

Mini has revealed what its future electric vehicle (EV) models will look like with a preview of its new design language, dubbed "Charismatic Simplicity."

According to the British automotive brand, Charismatic Simplicity focuses only on the essentials and will give each Mini model its own strong individual character expressed through distinctive design features.

“With our new Charismatic Simplicity design language, we are completely rethinking the iconic Mini. Our purist, progressive approach combines the simplicity of functional elements with the emotionality that MINI is renowned for. We are convinced that the conscious reduction to a few, but expressive elements enable innovations that would have been unthinkable before,” commented Mini Design Head Oliver Heilmer.

One of the things future Mini owners can expect exterior-wise, are new wheels. Per the carmaker, new Mini models will wear completely redesigned light alloy wheels that will feature a graphic design characterized by strong color contrast.

This, Mini said, creates an illusion of size that is further emphasized by outward-pointing spokes. In addition, the pared-back, two-dimensional wheel design contributes to improved aerodynamic qualities and increased range.

Meanwhile, inside future Mini models will be fresh appointments in the form of a redesigned steering wheel, updated seats, and a new round OLED infotainment system.

Per Mini, the new steering wheel will come in a two-spoke design as standard. Optionally, it can be had in a three-spoke design with the third bar as a distinct fabric finish.

As for the seats, Mini said that they will sport new colors and patterns paired with classic style elements, like the houndstooth pattern, to build a bridge from the past to the future.

Finally, the new 240-millimeter OLED infotainment system will wear a new sleek design and frameless look as well as feature a minimalistic user interface.

“With these innovative design highlights, Mini is already dropping a hint of the ground-breaking step the Charismatic Simplicity principle is taking. The new Mini design language combines quality, sustainability, and purist reinvention in perfect synthesis with the historic DNA of the brand,” Mini wrote in a press release.
