Which lawmaker proposed the use of special plates for electric vehicles (EV)?
Per the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Malasakit at Bayanihan Representative Anthony Golez, Jr. has proposed the bill to grant EVs with special plates. What possible benefits might the said special plates provide?
According to the LTO, the use of special plates for EVs might encourage more motorists to switch to a greener means of transportation and allow traffic enforcers to better identify EVs and electrified vehicles from those that use internal combustion engines.According to the agency, Malasakit at Bayanihan Representative Anthony Golez, Jr. proposed a bill that would grant special license plates for EV units, which aims to persuade Filipino motorists to switch to a greener means of mobility.
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II stated that he would consult with Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista regarding the proposed bill.
“Kasama ang inyong LTO sa mga panukala at mga aksyon para sa proteksyon ng ating kalikasan kaya welcome ito para sa amin bilang isang maliit na kontribusyon ng LTO sa pandaigdigang pagkilos para sa ating kalikasan, (the LTO is part of the proposals and actions that aim to protect our environment that’s why we are welcome to the idea as it can be our contribution to the global movement),” Mendoza said.
“Maluwag at kampante na ang inyong LTO na tumanggap ng mga ganitong panukala dahil alam namin na in the few months’ time ay mareresolba na natin ang shortage sa license plates, (We are open to such proposals as we know that we will resolve the ongoing license plates shortage in a few month’s time)” the newly-minted chief added.
The number of car dealers and brands that sell hybrids and battery-electric models has started to grow, the LTO noted. Part of the benefits reaped by hybrid and EV owners include exemption from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority number coding per the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act.
Should the proposed bill be enacted into law, Mendoza commented that traffic enforcers may easily identify EVs as well as provide electrified vehicle owners renown for their contribution to keeping the environment clean.
“Kung nakakapag-produce ang LTO ng mga special plate para sa ibang motor vehicle owners na gustong espesyal ang plaka ng kanilang sasakyan, walang dahilan para hindi natin ito pag-ukulan ng pansin lalo na at ang end-goal nito ay para sa ating kalikasan (if the LTO can produce special plates for motor vehicle owners who want a special license plate for their vehicles, there’s no reason why we can’t look into it, especially if its end-goal is for the preservation of our environment),” explained Mendoza.
