Mark Zuckerberg Works the Assembly Line for Ford Trucks
It's probably not an everyday occurrence to find a Harvard dropout who's worth more than $60 billion "adding antennas, cleats and drilling screws" on Ford F-150 trucks. But that's exactly what Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant witnessed when Facebook executive Mark Zuckerberg dropped in "just to see the outside world for a change."
Zuckerberg, who plans to visit 30 states by the end of the year, wants to meet people and see how they live and work as part of his "Personal Year of Travel Challenge."
His first stop last April was at the Ford Rouge Plant, where he met with its executive chairman, Bill Ford. He also tried his hand doing "a very small part in assembling some new Ford F-150s on the line" and going so far as personalizing an inspection sticker.
"I even signed the inspection sticker on one," Zuckerberg wrote. "You're welcome, future F-150 owner."
According to him, the most interesting part was when he sat down with the workers who did it everyday.
"Working on the line at an assembly plant is physically hard, and the people I met talked about how tiring it is and how worn down you get. Each person told me separately how important it is to have good shoes because you're essentially walking on a treadmill for 10 hours a day."
He also added that the main challenges of the work is maintaining focus and staying engaged with the tasks on hand.
"Every 52 seconds, you have to go through your set of tasks -- 650 times a day. You have to be perfect, but the biggest challenge is having the focus to do the same thing over and over again. The people I met are so good they keep the line running at full speed and listen to audio books or music in one earbud to stay engaged."
Aside from asking about work, Zuckerberg also learned more about how Ford employees incorporate new technology and innovation in their product development, design, and manufacturing.
Zuckerberg's "Personal Year of Travel Challenge" is his new year's resolution to connect with more Americans and mend "societal divisions wrought by technology and globalization."
