A total of 20 race-prepped Mazda MX-5 vied for the top spot at the opening round of the Manila Sports Car Club (MSCC) Miata Spec Series' inaugural season.
Mazda Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer Steven Tan said that the event is considered "a dream come true" for both the local automotive company and MSCC.
“It was a long time coming, and it’s the result of our blood, sweat, and tears. It’s truly a passion project, and I’m glad that MSCC members were able to celebrate driving with the most-raced car in the world—the MX-5,” Tan was quoted as saying.
For the maiden round of the aforementioned one-make race series held last June 11, Allan Uy secured the top spot in the first two races. He also recorded the fastest lap time of the day, covering the 4.189-kilometer Clark International Speedway in two minutes and 19.125 seconds with an average speed of 108.679 kph.
Joining him on the podium for Race 1 were Paul Henderson Perez and Angie King, respectively. In Race 2, however, King went up a notch and took the second spot while Juha Turalba finished third.
Mazda Philippines shared that all race cars that participated in the competition are identical, “and therefore proves to be a real test of driving skill throughout the 10-lap race.”
Under the hood of the MSCC Miata Spec Series MX-5 is a showroom-stock, 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine mated to a six-speed Skyactiv manual transmission.
Aside from that, the race cars’ suspension components have been upgraded and reinforced with Cusco sports coil overs and chassis braces.
Other features fitted in every Mazda MX-5 vehicle at the race are custom stainless steel exhaust system developed by Drift Xaust; Sparco competition steering wheel, racing seat, harness and safety net; Cusco racing roll cage and GT Radial Champiro SX2 tires mounted on custom 17 x 8.0 J Rota Strike wheels.
The next round of the MSCC Miata Spec Series — which is sponsored by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, GT Radial tires, and Rota Wheels — are scheduled on August 27, October 22, and November 26.
