Mazda has won the acclaimed
Red Dot Design Award for 2020 with two of its recent offerings, the
Mazda CX-30 crossover and the electric
mazd.
Based on Mazda’s well-known ‘
KODO – Soul of Motion’ design philosophy, the two cars were awarded because they exude Red Dot’s standard of innovative and visionary excellence.
Mazda defines KODO as potential energy in stationary forms, which Mazda ascribes with three descriptive words:
speed, tense, and allure. Inspired by the stance of a powerful animal ready to pounce or a sword about to strike, the poise of Mazda's design language is concentrated at the rear.
Nevertheless, despite sharing Mazda’s the current design theme, the two cars each have their own unique qualities that make them stand out not only from the rest of the Mazda pack, but from its peers from other brands as well.
The
CX-30 is easily recognizable as a Mazda and has a distinct relationship with the
Mazda 3 and other models. Meanwhile, as the more recent offering between the two, the
MX-30 has a more challenging and modern interpretation of the Kodo design.
Mazda has previously made a mark by winning the Red Dot Design Awards for its KODO design philosophy for some years now. The Japanese brand won the coveted design award with the new
Mazda 3 in 2019,
MX-5 RF in 2017, and the
MX-5 roadster, CX-3 and Mazda 2 in 2015.
The previous generation
Mazda 3 also won back in 2014, as did the
Mazda 6 in 2013.
The winners of this year's Red Dot awards are selected by an international jury of more than
40 design specialists in various fields of expertise.
“The award winners have excited the jury not only because of their aesthetic qualities but also their functionality. With their design, they set new standards for their respective industries,”
Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, was quoted as saying.
The Mazda CX-30 has been widely available on the global automotive market
since November 2019, while the Mazda MX-30 is expected to be introduced in late 2020.
Red Dot is one of the world's largest design competitions and has been around since 1955. Prizes are presented in a total of 49 different product categories - including cars.
