McLaren Reveals Name of its Fastest-Ever Hypercar
In March, McLaren Automotive revealed that it was working on its fastest-ever car that has "the capability to exceed the 243mph (391 kph) peak speed of the legendary McLaren F1 road car." At that time, it only bore the code name BP23. Well, the British carmaker has finally revealed the car's name and it is the McLaren Speedtail.
Labeled by McLaren Automotive as the "world’s first Hyper-GT" car, the McLaren Speedtail is McLaren's next model in its Ultimate Series line, with all 106 units to be built already spoken for. As for the significance of the 106 units? It corresponds to the number of McLaren F1 road cars that were sold by McLaren Automotive.
McLaren's goals for the McLaren Speedtail are actually very specific: it will be the fastest-ever McLaren in a straight line and it'll be its most luxurious model yet.
Like the McLaren F1, the McLaren Speedtail will have a three-seat cockpit design with a central driving position but unlike its legendary stablemate, it'll have a hybrid powertrain.
According to McLaren, the entire production run of the McLaren Speedtail was allocated before the car was even announced in November 2016. Production is due to begin at the end of 2019, with every McLaren Speedtail personalized to each owner’s taste by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), the division of McLaren Automotive responsible for bespoke customer commissions.
