After months of teasers, the long wait is finally over, and Mercedes-Benz now ushers in the second generation of its compact executive car, the Mercedes-Benz CLA, by launching the vehicle at this year's CES
The 2020 CLA, based on Mercedes' next-gen Modular Front Architecture Platform (MFA2), grows up a bit with a more svelte shape, thanks to the stretched hood and wide track with exposed wheel arches that make it wider and longer than the previous generation. And there's more power under the hood this time around at 221 hp compared to the predecessor's 208 hp.
The CLA will also no longer be MB's entry-level model, as it will be replaced by the recently launched A-Class subcompact sedan.
"The CLA becomes the sportier alternative to the more upright A-Class sedan, just as the CLS is to the E-Class and the Coupe versions are to the GLE and GLC crossovers," said Sam Fiorani, vice president at AutoForecast Solutions.
Inside, the CLA ups the ante with more tech than before, beginning with the installation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) software displayed on a high-res seven-inch touchscreen, which can be upgraded to 10.25-inch screens for a truly luxurious statement. The system may also be controlled with hand gestures, allowing occupants to just wave their hands in the air to select options.
Other noteworthy improvements include a retooled navigation feature, a Burmester Surround Sound System, and an Active Brake Assist System that automatically slows the sedan to avoid hitting vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians once the sensors detect them. A Driver Assistance Package adds loads of helpful driving aids, including active steering assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist and speed limit sign recognition.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA will make its way to MB dealership showrooms in late 2019.
