One of the fastest-growing segments in the local automotive industry is the compact crossover SUV category. Just recently, it welcomed a new contender in the form of the MG HS, the latest offering from the SAIC Motor-owned Brit car brand.
The MG HS boasts a clean and sporty exterior.
At the fore is the brand’s Stardust grille flanked by powerful LED headlamps with nine crystal lighting units, DRLs, and turn signal indicators. It also boasts a faux skid plate down at the bottom part of its front end.
Likewise, its rear packs a similar lighting setup with LED taillamps and sequential turn signals. A faux diffuser, as well as two exhaust pipes, can also be found at the tail of the MG HS.
It rides on 18-inch Diamond Cut alloy wheels.
Inside the MG HS is a suite of features that echoes what you see on the surface. Drivers are welcomed by its big 12.3-inch Virtual Driver Information Center and the large 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The MG Sport Bucket seats comfortably hug the front occupants in both cruising and fast-paced driving situations. It also features a large panoramic Stargazer Sunroof and ambient lighting.
Powering the HS is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine mated to a smooth-shifting seven-speed twin-clutch Sportronic transmission. This setup makes 167 horses and 250Nm of torque.
The MG HS is currently offered in two variants: the Alpha and Trophy, priced at P1,258,888 and P1,308,888, respectively.
As we’ve mentioned, the local subcompact crossover segment offers plenty of choices. The Geely Coolray is one that might be more appealing to car buyers who are looking for a more affordable option as its base variant starts with a price tag of under P1-M.
The Geely Coolray is arguably one of the most handsome crossovers on the segment’s roster. It boasts plenty of sharp lines and aggressive angles that make this compact SUV a real looker.
At the front is a two-part grille with either halogen or LED headlamps (depending on the variant), LED fog lamps, and LED DRLs. The rear sports LED taillights and quad exhaust tips. It wears either 17- or 18-inch wheels.
The cabin of the Geely Coolray can be had with either fabric, PVC leather, or sport-type leather seats. It features a 10.25-inch infotainment system and a panoramic sunroof.
Under its hood is a 1.5-liter gasoline mill mated to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch tranny which makes 177hp and 255Nm of torque.
It is sold locally in three variants. The Geely Coolray Comfort is priced at P978,000 while the Geely Coolray Premium comes with a P1,088,000 sticker price. On the other hand, the range-topping Geely Coolray Sport has a price tag of P1,198,000.
Another viable option for those on the market for a compact crossover is the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro. This vehicle offers a more mature look than the two aforementioned SUVs.
The front end boasts a pair of Matrix LED headlights designed in a way that it complements the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro’s horizontal and boxy dimensions. LED taillights, a roof-mounted brake light, and twin exhaust pipes accentuate the crossover’s rear end. Its wheels measure 18 inches.
Inside, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro blasts you with an abundance of digital and touchscreen panels. These include the seven-inch instrument cluster, the 10.25-inch infotainment system, and the eight-inch A/C LCD touchscreen controls.
It also comes with a leather steering wheel and PVC leather seats.
Power comes from a 1.5-liter gasoline powerplant with CVT. Together, it makes 145 horses and 210Nm of torque.
The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro comes in two variants: the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro 1.5L and a two-tone option. They are priced at P1,208,000 and P1,233,000, respectively.
