Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced that its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) Outlander won the 2022 iF Design Award.
In a statement, the company said that sport utility vehicle (SUV) gave the brand its first accolade from one of the world's most prestigious design awards organized by iF International Forum Design GmbH based in Hannover, Germany.
MMC cited that for the 2022 iF Design Award DESIGN AWARD 2022, around 11,000 entries submitted from 57 countries were judged by a jury of international design experts based on five criteria: idea, form, function, differentiation and impact.
“The new Outlander PHEV is Mitsubishi’s flagship SUV that brings together its expertise in PHEV and S-AWC (Super All-wheel Control) technology. It elevates both the appeal of an SUV and an EV, with its smooth, powerful acceleration and the safe, secure driving performance in various situations. The exterior expresses a bold, fixating presence with a solid stance and dependability for drivers. The interior has a high-quality and advanced space with a third-row seating, and the horizontal instrument panel makes it easy to understand the vehicle posture while driving, and adds a feeling of robustness and spaciousness,” the award-giving body stated in its website.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features thick, horizontal proportions and jet tail fin pillars inspired by the vertical tail of airplanes while its horizontally-sculpted panel adds a feeling of robustness and spaciousness.
"We are truly honored that the all-new Outlander, which epitomizes the new generation of Mitsubishi design, has received one of the most renowned design awards in the world," MMC General Manager for Design Seiji Watanabe was quoted as saying.
"The all-new Outlander has been well received by customers in Japan since the start of sales last December, and this award will give us further momentum to introduce our all-new flagship to even more users," the executive noted.
The winners of the iF Design Award are selected in multiple disciplines which include product, packaging, communication and service design, architecture and interior architecture, as well as professional concept, user experience (UX) and user interface (UI).
To note, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) introduced the Outlander PHEV to the local market in September 2020.
According to MMPC, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a fusion of the “best traits of their models: the powerful Mitsubishi Pajero SUV, iconic four-wheel drive rally car Lancer Evolution and the pure electric vehicle i-MiEV”.
