Mitsubishi PH shows commitment to environment, community with latest programs

MMPC Tree Planting Ceremony

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) is furthering its thrusts toward environmental sustainability and community development as reflected in the two initiatives conducted recently.

MMPC continued its three-phased forestation project in the country and forged a partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) to formalize its Balik-Baterya Scholarship Program.
  • Who is MMPC's latest partner for the Balik-Baterya Scholarship Program??

MMPC partner for the recycling program is Philippine Business for Social Progress.
  • In a statement, the Japanese automotive manufacturer’s distributor in the country shared that it has completed its three-phased forestation project as well as forged a collaboration with Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) to formalize its Balik-Baterya Scholarship Program.

    100-hectare reforestation program

According to MMPC, the recently-completed reforestation program covered 100 hectares of land in Bangui, Ilocos Norte; Siniloan, Laguna and Infanta, Quezon Province.

Planting various species of trees, the company said that the large-scale program (made in agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources [DENR>) is in line with its vision for “a greener and more sustainable future.

    MMPC Tree Planting Ceremony

MMPC noted that the most recent tree-planting activity took place in Barangay Pinaglapatan, Infanta, Quezon Province where a beach forest was established by planting bamboo, mangrove, and other beach forest species along Agos River. The effort — initiated by Samahan ng Magsasaka at Mangingisda ng Pinaglapatan (SMMP) through the support of MMPC and DENR — is targeted to rehabilitate the riverbanks, preventing soil erosion in the area.

Through the combined manpower of MMPC employee-volunteers, local communities and the government, some 78,700 tree seedlings were planted on the 38-hectare territory along Agos River and will be continuously monitored by the automotive firm and DENR.

Aside from that, MMPC also turned over a lighthouse to help assist fishermen and farmers. “For 60 years, it’s been MMPC’s commitment to make life better for Filipinos not just through our vehicles, but also through our services and CSR efforts. And today, we are about to nurture this community’s future, one seed at a time. I hope that the seeds we plant today will flourish for generations to come,” MMPC Chairman Noriaki Hirakata said during the tree-planting activity.

    Balik-Baterya Scholarship Program

On the other hand, MMPC forged a partnership with Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) to formalize its Balik-Baterya Scholarship Program.

To note, the project —started in 2019 in collaboration with Oriental Motolite Marketing Corporation (OMMC) — involved recycling and disposal of used lead-acid batteries produced in the MMPC production facility.

MMPC said that the earnings from the recycling program will form part of its corporate social responsibility funding that is currently being directed towards scholarships for senior high school students of Don Jose Integrated High School and Biñan City Senior High School-Timbao Campus.

    Balik Baterya Scholarship Awarding

The initiative — aligned with MMPC’s commitment to dish out a positive impact on society through environmental conservation and education — was formalized through a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed last July 13.

Through such program, some 20 senior high school students were given scholarships under the Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) Track. The scholars were those taking Electrical Installation and Maintenance and Shielded Metal Arc Welding, which will allow them to gain skills and qualifications in the automotive industry.

    Balik-Baterya Scholarship Program MOA Signing

MMPC Executive Vice President for Corporate Division Takehisa Usami expressed the company’s gratitude over the collaboration that resulted in environment preservation as well as supporting the community through the scholarships granted to students. “By investing in the education of the youth, we provide opportunities for the younger generation to realize their full potential and to create a difference in the world,” he added.
