Mitsubishi Motors (MMC) has officially unveiled its
next-generation MPV at the
2017 Indonesia International Auto Show, calling it the
Mitsubishi Xpander as a reflection of Mitsubishi's ambition " to expand the customer's motoring experience, and to make it more fulfilling, more enjoyable."
"The Mitsubishi XPANDER is set to expand MMC's strong presence in the Indonesian SUV and Light Commercial Vehicle markets further into the booming MPV segments and beyond, throughout the ASEAN region," said Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's Chief Executive Officer
Osamu Masuko. "We intend to be right at the forefront of this growth by expanding customers' lives."
At
4,475 mm long and
1,750 mm wider, the Mitsubishi Xpander's interior is larger than its competitors, with generous headroom for all its occupants and excellent access to its third-row seats. Another benefit to the Xpander's large cabin is its cargo-carrying capacity thanks to the
60:40-split second row and
50:50-split third row backrests, allowing for various configurations including a large, flat storage area that's free from bumps and gaps. In addition, the second row's center backrest can be folded down to create either a wide armrest or space for carrying extra-long items. The Xpander also offers storage spaces of varying sizes, including a concealed box in the dashboard. And despite a passenger capacity for seven occupants, the Xpander has a total of 16 bottle holders. The Xpander's passengers are also kept comfortable with its air conditioner that has
eight settings for the front seats and
four in the rear. Other features found in the Xpander's cabin are the
multi-info color LED display of the instrument cluster that also includes an
eco-drive indicator, a Bluetooth-equipped entertainment system, a 12V socket for each row and a
smartphone tray for each seat (!), and a
Keyless Operation System that can unlock the doors and start the vehicle's engine even while the key is in the driver's pocket.
The Xpander carries Mitsubishi's
'Dynamic Shield' front design, tying its looks with that of the Outlander PHEV, Pajero Sport, and Eclipse Cross while the
flared fenders give it a mor e aggressive stance. For its exterior lighting, its
LED position lights are located high up in the engine hood side trim to make the car more noticeable while the headlights are placed low in the bumper to maximize vision during rough road conditions. As for the
rear combination LED lights, it extends into the tailgate with the
L-shaped LED tail lights separate from the brake lights.
Powering the Xpander is a
1.5-liter, 104 hp gasoline engine fitted with Mitsubishi's
MIVEC system "for high power output, low fuel consumption, and low exhaust emissions" and mated to it is either a
five-speed manual or
four-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. Also, the Xpander has a ground clearance of
205 mm and rides on
16-inch wheels.
Produced at Mitsubishi's Bekasi Prefecture factory in the West Java Province of Indonesia with an expected annual production of
80,000 units, the Mitsubshi Xpander will go on sale in Indonesia later this year before being shipped to the ASEAN region and other markets
"from early 2018." As for its prices in Indonesia, it ranges
from Rp 189,050,000 (roughly P718,000) for the base GLX variant with M/T
to Rp 245,350,000 (around P932,00) for the range-topping Ultimate A/T.
