KEY TAKEAWAYS
By how much has the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) Bus Carousel eased traffic in the area?
According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the EDSA Bus Carousel has cut the commuter travel time in half in the area. Why was the EDSA Bus Carousel narrowed down?
Per MMDA, the EDSA Bus Carousel was narrowed down to accommodate a bike lane.During an event at the Mega Manila Consortium, MMDA Acting Chairman Romando Artes said that the aforementioned bus rapid transit system has been effective in moving commuters as well as easing traffic along EDSA.
“Commuter travel time along EDSA was cut in half because of the EDSA Bus Carousel,” Artes commented.
In addition, Artes also said that bringing back passenger buses along EDSA under the old system would cause traffic congestion.
The government has already spent on EDSA Bus Carousel and Bike Lane. At present, its stations are still being improved.
Lanes along EDSA have also been narrowed under the road diet scheme to accommodate the bicycle lane.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has also completed its Bike Master Plan and has continued to build infrastructure under the project.
“It is the DOTR that must decide whether or not the EDSA Bus Carousel should be removed,” Artes noted.
To recall, the EDSA Bus Carousel was one of the government infrastructures that was badly damaged by the recent typhoon Egay. An emergency repair was carried out last week.
