What is the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's latest plan?
The agency is eyeing to extend the no-contact apprehension policy on major roads in Metro Manila, including the Mabuhay Lanes. What is the agency's objective before June 13?
Its plan is for traffic enforcers to no longer issue citation tickets.Newly-appointed MMDA Chairman Romando Artes bared the plan during President Rodrigo Duterte’s “Talk to the People” program.
Artes said that in line with the plan, the agency will put up more closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) cameras along main thoroughfares.
However, he said that currently, they are testing a new system wherein MMDA enforcers wearing body cameras no longer need to issue citation tickets for violations.
“Siguro po bago tayo bumaba sa puwesto natin sa June 13, Mr. President, ay fully operational — hindi na po magti-ticket ‘yung ating mga enforcers at lahat po ng panghuhuli ay gagawin through no-contact apprehension (Maybe before we step down on June 13, Mr. President, it will be fully operational — our enforcers will no longer issue tickets and all arrests will be made through no-contact apprehension),” Artes shared.
“Ito po ay mabuti dahil unang-una mababawasan po or mawawala ‘yung mga pangongotong at ‘yung enforcers. At ganun din po, hindi na po makakaabala sa traffic, kasi po everytime na may mahuhuli, tatabi, ti-ticket-an. Ito po ay nakakasagabal sa traffic (This is good because, first of all, the bribes and the enforcers will be reduced or eliminated. Also, it would not hamper the traffic situation anymore, because every time someone gets caught, they have to pull over and get the ticket. This affects the traffic situation),” he added.
Last year, then MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos urged motorists to use the Mabuhay Lanes as alternate routes to avoid the EDSA gridlock or the tollways.
