Based on the stories shared by the Papugay Awardees, most of them enjoy the flexibility of working as a moto taxi rider.According to the Grab Philippines-owned motorcycle taxi company, the said event was staged at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City attended by thousands of Move It riders and their families.
This year’s Papugay Awardees included a single mother balancing parenthood and work to a former ambulance driver pursuing her passion for motorcycles.
“While Move It Day is the company’s annual year-end event to show its appreciation to the thousands of rider-partners, the Papugay Awards is the company’s way of recognizing rider-partners that exemplifies Move It’s values of integrity, respect and commitment to safety and quality service. To qualify for the Papugay Awards, rider-partners must demonstrate exceptional booking completion rates, maintain high star ratings, ensure safe driving practices, and receive exemplary feedback from passengers,” the company wrote in a press release.
Here are some of their stories.
Super mom
29-year-old Merry Ann Paz is a single mother who juggles her responsibility of raising and providing for her two children.
Aside from sending her kids to school, Paz is also responsible for paying the family’s monthly bills. She relies primarily on her earnings as a motorcycle taxi rider.
“Noong una, kinakabahan ako na mag-moto taxi dahil na rin sa mga safety issues na pwedeng kaharapin sa daan (at first I had was having second thoughts in becoming a motorcycle taxi rider because of the safety issues one might face while on the road),” Paz noted.
However, the solo parent emphasized that Move It provides training on road safety to help them navigate busy thoroughfares safely.
Additionally, the platform touts a suite of security and reporting features that enhance their safety. She also shared that she picked up a lot from online courses via the Move It Academy learning platform, focused on defensive driving, safe spaces, and passenger handling.
The ‘legend’
As for 38-year-old Cyprus Panopio, becoming a Move It rider has helped him earn more than just a living, but a fun status he can be proud of.
Panopio has earned the status of “Alamat” or a legend. Due to his rider standing, he enjoys a robust array of incentives including P2,000 worth of groceries, gas money, medicine, and GrabFood vouchers each month.
“Bumabiyahe kasi ako ng 5 to 10 a.m., tapos umuuwi ako para ihatid ang mga anak ko sa school, mamalengke at magluto. Pagkatapos ng kaunting pahinga, balik-biyahe ako ng 4 to 10 p.m. (I travel from 5 to 10 a.m., then I go home to take my children to school, go shopping and cook. After a little rest, I will return from 4 to 10 p.m.),” Panopio shared.
He added that the flexibility offered by the platform allows him to balance his time between his livelihood, his business, and family much more easily.
While Panopio also runs a small business that supports his family, including his mother who suffered a stroke, his Move It earnings have provided extra financial stability. According to Panopio, he hopes to use this additional income to fund his three sons’ education until they earn their degrees.
Strong, independent
Joining the company’s roster of strong and independent lady riders is 45-year-old Melanie Lacson.
As a former ambulance driver, Lacson had to rush sick people to the hospital. Her experience during the COVID-19 pandemic also helped make her a fighter.
In addition to her time ferrying the sick, she also became a family driver, until she realized that riding motorcycles was the better livelihood option.
“Matagal ko nang gustong mag-motor dahil mas madaling magmaniobra sa daan (I have always wanted to ride a motorcycle since it is easier to maneuver bikes on the road),” she explained.
For Lacson, being a Move It rider partner is a dream come true.
Fulfilled flexibility
Meanwhile, 33-year-old Bennie Boladas Bechayda quit his old regular job as a security guard.
As a security guard, Bechayda had to take loans while working long shifts. Not only was his income lacking but he had less time for his family.
“Sa dati kong trabaho, nagsasangla pa ako ng ATM card, at wala rin masyadong oras para sa pamilya, Ngayon, malaki ang pasok ng grasya — guminhawa ang buhay ng pamilya ko (In my previous job, I even mortgaged an ATM card, and I didn't have much time for my family. Now, my earnings are better — my family's life is easier),” Bechayda said.
Move It Day 2024
On top of recognizing its performing riders, Move It also prepared fun and exciting activities for its partners. These included photo booths, games, raffles, comedy shows, a talent competition, a rock concert, and even motorcycle maintenance services.
Muli, salamat po sa inyong lahat (To every Move It rider-partner, we sincerely thank you for your loyalty and diligence as a reliable carrier of Filipino passengers. Your dedication and hard work is the reason why thousands of daily commuters get to the office and get home to their families easier and safer. We are excited to be a part of your every journey in achieving your dreams, as we together meet the demands of commuters for safe, honest and reliable service.
