NAIAX, Skyway speed limit to increase to 80kph

Skyway Stage 3

MANILA: The speed limit for NAIA Expressway (NAIAX) and Skyway Stage 3 will be adjusted to 80 kilometers per hour (kph).

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will SMC Infra implement the adjusted speed limit on the NAIA Expressway (NAIAX) and Skyway Stage 3?

The adjustments from the previous 60-kph cap will take effect on January 15 for the NAIAX and January 20 for the Skyway Stage 3.
  • What is the company's rationale for the adjustments?

The change will make travel on NAIAx and Skyway Stage 3 faster and more efficient for everyone.
  • According to SMC (San Miguel Corporation) Infrastructure, the adjustments from the previous 60-kph cap — which followed a comprehensive study conducted by the company’s traffic safety managers — will take effect tomorrow (January 15) for the NAIAX and January 20 for the Skyway Stage 3.

“This change will make travel on NAIAx and Skyway Stage 3 faster and more efficient for everyone,” SMC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ramon Ang, noting the company “carefully studied” the said move to ensure that it will be beneficial to motorists while prioritizing safety.

“This also complements the ongoing reconfiguration of exit plazas at NAIAx, which should allow for less congestion and help improve motorists’ experience on the expressway,” the company’s top honcho added.

While motorists can now go a little faster, a 60-kph speed limit will still be implemented on the aforementioned expressways' curved portions.

“This is to maintain safety, as we do not want to put any motorists at risk of accidents due to miscalculation or oversteering, especially where there are sharp curves, given the limitations to the design of both the NAIAx and Skyway 3,” Ang explained.

Further, Ang noted that the right-of-way issues during the construction of NAIAx and Skyway Stage 3 forced redesigns of some sections and even a number of access ramps, due to very limited space. As a result, portions of both expressways have sharp curves where motorists need to slow down.

Ang also said that to ensure that everyone will follow the rule, Land Transportation Office-deputized traffic patrollers equipped with radar speed guns will monitor and issue citations to motorists caught violating the speed limits.

“We appeal to our motorists to observe speed limits at our expressway facilities for the safety of all,” Ang concluded.

To note, NAIAx is the elevated toll road that connects the Skyway System to the three passenger terminals of NAIA, and other key areas such as Entertainment City, Macapagal Boulevard, Sucat Road in Paranaque City, and the road network to Cavite province.

On the other hand, the Skyway Stage 3 is an 18-km road that links Balintawak, Quezon City, and North Luzon Expressway to the Skyway System at Buendia in Makati and the South Luzon Expressway at Alabang, Muntinlupa City. Stage 3 also features exits in the cities of Manila, San Juan, and Caloocan.
