The new BMW 5 Series sedan will launch with an online video game, thanks to its partnership with AirConsole.
AirConsole is an online gaming platform that will allow would-be owners of the new BMW 5 Series sedan to play casual games while the vehicle is stationary.
The experience is far from playing from a real console though as owners will most likely be able to run flash games through AirConsole and not immersive titles, like the upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Upon checking AirConsole’s website, the titles included in its library of “more than 190 games” include cooking simulators, racing games, quizzes, and a few sports games.
To play a game, new BMW 5 Series sedan owners will have to use their smartphones as their controllers. To do this, the German carmaker said that a QR code will appear on the BMW Curved Display that will allow players to intuitively connect their smartphone controllers to the infotainment screen.
After AirConsole launches with the new BMW 5 Series sedan, it will be rolled out to other models, the carmaker said.
To celebrate the launch of BMW’s take on in-car gaming, a 5 Series sedan with a unique gaming wrap will be presented by the BMW Group.
“Its design symbolizes diving into the gaming experience down to the individual pixels. The large pixels are clearly recognizable as an homage to the now iconic 8-bit era of computer games. The color scheme takes its inspiration from the various games available on the AirConsole platform. Elements of video game controllers wrap around the i5 and thus pick up on the unique solution for in-car gaming with AirConsole, where the smartphone becomes the controller and puts all the game-play options at the players’ fingertips,” BMW wrote in a press release.
The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series sedan will begin in October 2023.
