New GranTurismo will be Maserati's first EV
The first prototype of the new GranTurismo, which will be Maserati's first car to use electric power, has been test driven by the Italian marque at its Innovation Lab and the streets of Modena.
This front-engined GranTurismo has a similar shape as its previous generation, with a long hood and a cabin that's placed almost on top of the rear wheels.
Its vertical headlights look similar to its hyper car sibling the MC20, and its low-mounted grille wears the Maserati logo in its middle with vertical slats alongside.
In the pictures of the prototype, a set of aero wheels can be seen, and eagle-eyed observers noticed that in an overhead photo, a chrome-tipped exhaust peeks out of the rear bumper. That suggests that the GranTurismo will offer a gasoline engine option.
Maserati didn't say any specifics about the electric drivetrain, but this GT could pack a hybrid system like the Levante SUV. It's also exciting to think that it could also have a V8 under its hood, like the previous GranTurismo did.
