New Land Rover Defender hits Asian auto market

Jaguar Land Rover has just brought the new Land Rover Defender to the Asian region.

Revealed via digital launch, the latest offering for the Land Rover lineup now sports more contemporary lines, yet manages to stay true to its iconic design and capabilities, maintaining its adventurous spirit.

Coventry Motors Corp – Land Rover Philippines president Chris Ward said that the new Land Rover Defender exudes the fun-loving character of Filipinos.

“The new Defender really emanates the Filipino spirit of adventure and is now the perfect vehicle to handle both the stop start world of city traffic and also ideal for the trips away from the city. Interest in the New Defender has been far beyond our initial expectations and we have been so surprised at just how many Filipinos know and already understand what Defender is and the spirit of adventure it creates,” he said.

“For the Land Rover brand here in the Philippines, the new Defender is like the glue which cements the whole line up again and reinforces the brand image amongst the other 4x4 competitors. Defender has such a strong following with a vibrant and very active Land Rover Club of the Philippines which has been operating for over 20 years. This is true testament to the strength of the Defender,” Ward added.

For the regional launch , the new Defender is initially being offered in the 110 wheelbase, but will be followed by the compact 90 come first quarter of next year.

Powering the new Land Rover Defender is a six-cylinder, 3.0-liter Ingenium P400 gasoline-fed engine with an efficient Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) powertrain.

On the outside, the Land Rover Defender wears very minimal front and rear overhangs to give maximum spacing when approaching or leaving rough, steep angles. It maintains the side-hinged rear tailgate and spare wheel mounted at the rear for that famous look.

On the inside, the Land Rover Defender features a dash-mounted gear shifter to accommodate an optional central front ‘jump’ seat that instantly turns the front space into a three-seating capacity like early Land Rovers.

The  Defender 110 can give as much 2,380-liters of boot space when the second row is folded.

Land Rover Chief Design Officer Gerry McGovern claimed that the latest design remained true to its roots.  “The new Defender is respectful of its past but is not harnessed by it. This is a new Defender for a New Age. Its unique personality is accentuated by its distinctive silhouette and optimum proportions, which make it both highly desirable and seriously capable – a visually compelling 4x4 that wears its design and engineering integrity with uncompromised commitment.”

The new Land Rover Defender wears the most durable Land Rover structure to date as it is designed on a lightweight aluminium monocoque platform. It is said to be thrice as durable the than body-on-frame designs.

Featuring a permanent all-wheel drive and a twin-speed transfer box  with a Rear Axle Open Differential (or an optional Electronic Active Differential), the new Defender is meant to cover all types of trails and terrains. The configurable Terrain Response is now available on the new Defender, so that professional off-roaders can modify the settings to suits their driving style as well as the conditions of the road. Those who are trying it out for the first time can use auto function to easily get out of challenge.

The high ground clearance of 291 millimeters (mm) and wading capability of 900mm provides more confidence for the drivers when going through high waters.

Other notable features include ClearSight Ground View technology and the new Pivi Pro infotainment system.

Jaguar Land Rover Product Engineering Executive Director Nick Rogers said that such improvements make the new Land Rover Defender an icon for the 21st Century.

"We've embraced Defender's stunning capability and minimalistic, functional interior to reinvent the icon for the 21st century. New Defender gives us the licence to do things differently, to push the boundaries and do the unthinkable, without ever losing the character and authenticity of the original. From the start we had an absolute obsession with functionality beneath the skin, from choosing the right materials through to state of the art connectivity. The result is not only the most capable Land Rover ever made, but also a truly comfortable, modern vehicle that people will love to drive," he added.

The new Defender is offered in four Editions: The Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban.

According to Land Rover, the exclusive First Edition model features a unique specification and will be available throughout the first year of production.

Earlier, Carmudi reported that latest iteration of the Land Rover Defender will be priced at the following:
