Nissan announced recently that the all-new Nissan Z has been named the official safety car of the Super GT race series. According to the Japanese carmaker, the Nissan Z will serve as the organization’s official safety car for the 2022 Super GT race season starting at the third round of the season to be held at the Suzuka Circuit.
A handover ceremony of the donated Nissan Z will take place on May 29.
“This year we began competing in the Super GT with the Nissan Z GT500. Now the Z — the embodiment of Nissan DNA — will support the series’ safety,” said Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. President and Nissan Motorsports Business Unit Office Head Takao Katagiri.
The Nissan Z Super GT safety car will wear a yellow finish as well as equipment that will help it perform its tasks. It gets a light bar atop the car’s roof and LED lights installed on the grille. Inside, the safety car will have Recaro race seats as well as Nismo-branded five-point seatbelts.
Some of the Nissan Z’s duties as official safety car include pre-race inspections of the track for obstacles and leading competition cars when race accidents occur.
“The Z sports car symbolizes Nissan's passion for driving and has been loved by fans around the world for more than 50 years. Unveiled in August 2021, the all-new Z has been enthusiastically received by new and old aficionados alike thanks to its iconic styling and exciting technology-driven performance. By competing in this season's Super GT with the Nissan Z GT500, Nissan and NMC aim to broaden the Z’s fan base and increase the exposure of the Super GT series,” Nissan said in a press release.
