Porsche revealed that the new Cayenne luxury crossover will get a “very wide” front-row screen — the kind that covers the entire dashboard from the driver’s side to the front passenger’s side.
Poised for its debut at the upcoming Auto Shanghai show in China, the new Porsche Cayenne will be equipped with a 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central display, and a 10.9-inch passenger display.
The three screens make up the so-called Porsche Driver Experience and encompass almost the entire dashboard to give front-row occupants access to almost all relevant information while on the road.
The instrument panel, the German carmaker pointed out, is curved and — depending on the equipment level — can offer up to seven views.
“The rev counter, online navigation, Night Vision Assist, or 3D driving assistance system can all be selected to be in the foreground. A greatly reduced view and a classic mode are also available, the latter of which transfers the typical Porsche five-tube instrument cluster design into the digital age,” Porsche explained in a press release.
As for the central display, the wide screen acts as the control center for Porsche Communication Management. Here, the driver can operate numerous driving and comfort features as well as navigation and multimedia features.
Meanwhile, the passenger’s screen serves as an extension of the central display and allows those sitting shotgun to share tasks with the driver, like taking charge of navigation or by selecting a media service.
According to the Stuttgart-based automotive brand, the passenger’s screen is equipped with a special foil, which ensures that whatever is displayed on the screen cannot be easily seen from the driver’s seat, which eliminates distractions for the driver.
Despite the wealth of digital screens, the new Porsche Cayenne still sports several tactile controls on the dashboard. That’s because the aim of the Porsche Driver Experinece, the marque said, is to create a perfect balance digital and analog elements.
“All the controls that are important to the driving experience are also grouped directly around the steering wheel. Typically for a Porsche, the new engine start button is to the left of the steering wheel. The gear selector is now to the right of the steering wheel between the instrument cluster and the central display,” Porsche wrote in a press release.
By moving the gear selector to the right-hand side of the steering wheel, the center console now has space for a large air conditioning control panel with analog controls. That said, air conditioning settings can be made quickly and intuitively on the clearly laid out control surface.
The combination of touch recognition and the haptic feedback with mechanical air conditioning switches as well as a physical volume controller ensures functionality that is both haptically and aesthetically pleasing.
Other notable upgrades to the new Porsche Cayenne include a cooled smartphone storage area with an inductive charging function, two USB-C ports in the front storage compartment and another two in the rear area of the center console, as well as a new In-Car Video function.
