Affordable, powerful, and highly customizable—there’s very little doubt why the Ford Mustang is the world’s bestselling sports car of the last 50 years, the world's bestselling sports car for five consecutive years, and the most popular car model on Facebook, with almost 8.5 million likes to its name.
So much goodies combine to make the 2020 Ford Mustang the high-performance car to beat. And its rich racing history and pedigree only serve to add to its legendary status.
Locally, the Ford Mustang comes in four different trims with two engine options—a 5.0-liter V8 for the GT variants (460hp, 569Nm) and a 2.3-liter Ecoboost for the Fastback (310hp, 434Nm), priced from PHP2,585,000 to PHP3,718,000. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed SelectShift automatic, but the convertible variant comes with the option for a 6-speed manual transmission. These powertrain options are the same for the previous and current model Mustang.
Despite having the same powertrain, some changes can be seen in the sports car’s exterior and interior features.
The difference between the front façade of the new Mustang and the outgoing model is immediately obvious. The facelift features a lower, restyled front grille and hood, while the hood vents have been relocated to a different position.
The new Mustang also replaces the LED headlamp assembly with a new design, accompanied by nifty additional features including turn signals, low beams, projector high beams, fog lamps, and signature lighting.
At the sides, nothing has changed. However, the 2020 model is being offered with 12 new wheel rim designs, plus three new paint finishes. There are also some undercarriage improvements courtesy of new MagneRide suspension systems that further improves the Mustang’s renowned ride and handling.
Out back, the LED taillights and the rear bumper receive some aesthetic tweaks. The exhaust tips have also been revised, with the EcoBoost Mustang getting a dual unit and the V8-powered Mustang GT driving off with the standard quad-tip. The new Mustang also sports an active valve exhaust system and optional new spoiler.
For the first time ever, the new Mustang finally receives an optional heated steering wheel. The new Ford Mustang cabin also welcomes drivers to a 12-inch LCD instrument cluster—the first all-digital display ever offered for the model. What’s nifty about it is that it allows users to customize colors, gauge layout, selectable drive modes, and more. The display can even be customized for Normal, Sport and Track modes. A MyMode system lets drivers set their drive settings and remembers them for the next use. That even includes steering and suspension preferences.
The new Mustang is also available with Ford SYNC Connect with FordPass, which allows the owners to start, lock, unlock and locate their car remotely through a smartphone app. The onboard SYNC 3 is as advanced as infotainment systems can get, allowing for voice activated responses along with the capacitive touchscreen with impressive responsiveness. The intuitive and user-friendly system lets users connect to and control their smartphone, while also providing navigation in real-time. The audio system includes Shaker Pro Audio with HD Radio Technology that comes with AM/FM stereo, single-CD and MP3 player functionalities linking to 12 speakers – includingan eight-inch trunk-mounted subwoofer. Thanks to HD audio technology, reception is crystal clear when using the radio, with no audible distortion, buzz, popping or static to be heard.
Contrasting the sportiness of the undercarriage is the premium-feel interior, thanks to additions like hand-stitched center console wrap, padded knee bolsters and aluminum finish highlights. The 2020 Ford Mustang also has a new key fob design and an updated badge on the instrument panel.
In related news Ford has also given the Mustang an electrified version, embodied in the Mustang Mach-E already on sale now.
With its maximum 459hp and 830Nm torque, the Mustang Mach-E is more than worthy to bear the name of Ford’s performance nameplate. The all-electric vehicle reaches these numbers (Mustang Mach-E GT and GT Performance Edition only) courtesy of a 757kWh battery and rear-wheel drive provided by a single permanent magnet electric motor and a second motor that adds all-wheel drive capabilities. The available extended range battery pushes the car to a range of plus-minus 500kms.
