Old against new: 2020 vs. 2021 Ford F-150

Philippine pickup fans got treated to a great spectacle when Ford Philippines decided to pull back the curtain on both the 2020 and 2021 Ford F-150 in a single event. Unfortunately, while the unveiling of the 2020 F-150 represented its local launch, the one for the 2021 model was simply meant as a teaser.

Nevertheless, it’s good to finally have Ford’s large pickup return to our shores. It was a big hit when it launched here in the late 90s, but interest soon died down as buyers eventually discovered it wasn’t a good fit for the Philippines’ miniscule highways and side streets. Perhaps its return signals Ford’s renewed trust in the country’s road network. Or maybe they just want to dispose the last units of the pickup's thirteenth generation. But we digress.

The 2020 Ford F-150 is already available locally. Maybe sometime next year, the 2021 may make it to our shores as well. So perhaps you’re asking, should you buy an F-150 now, or is it better to hold it until next year’s model arrives?

Exterior

The 2020 Ford F-150 represents the last of the thirteenth generation, while the 2021 version marks the beginning of the fourteenth generation. So naturally, there’s a lot of changes to be seen. Although the outline is practically the same, the overall design is vastly different, starting with the more contemporary façade. The sides also receive some dimples at the lower doors, and the rear combination lamps also get some retooling. All things considered, the 2021 Ford F-150 length shouldn’t be much different than the current model. That would leave the F-150 length measuring between 5316mm and 6362mm. Bed length options are the same: 5'5", 6'6" and the 8' options.

Seating capacity remains the same for both year models—three to six people, depending on variant. There are several improvements in ergonomics, comfort and tech, including a larger touchscreen display. Ford has also teased an infotainment system that allows owners to watch movies from the truck bed, although it remains to be seen whether this feature will be standard or optional.

Towing Capacity

The highlight of the 2021 lineup is easily the all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine—one of five engine options for the 2021 F-150. This one can carry up to 1,474kgs and tow up to 6,350kgs when equipped with the Max Trailer Tow Package. It’s “the most torque ever in an F-150 with available Pro Power Onboard providing up to 18 times more exportable power than the nearest competitor,” according to iconic American car brand. Meanwhile, the 3.5-liter PowerBoost V6 in the hybrid model can carry and pull 962 and 5,761kgs, respectively.

Due to the absence of the Max Trailer Tow Package, the 2020 F-150 model is only good for more or less 6,000kgs of towing capacity.

Transmission

Despite the different generations, the ten-speed automatic that was introduced in the 2020 model will remain in the 2021 version. It will be the sole gearbox option for the 2021 lineup.

Pricing and options

Although the 2020 Ford F-150 has six variants in all, Ford PH only brought two locally: one is the F-150 3.5L V6 EcoBoost 4x4 Platinum AT (PHP2,998,000), and the other is the F-150 3.5L V6 EcoBoost 4x2 Lariat AT (PHP 2,698,000). The upcoming 2021 F-150 shares the same variants as the current model.
