Porsche Cayenne tows Airbus A380 to set Guinness World Record
Porsche recently set a Guinness World Record with the help of Air France by having a standard Porsche Cayenne S Diesel tow a 285-ton Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, a distance of 42 meters for the "Heaviest aircraft pulled by a production car" record. In the process, the Cayenne broke the record set in 2013 by a Nissan Patrol which towed a 170-ton Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane for 50 meters--a margin of 115 tons.
The stunt was done at the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport last week, with the Cayenne being driven from Porsche Cars Great Britain in London to the venue. Incredibly, Porsche drove the Cayenne back to London afterward. Behind the wheel of the Cayenne during the stunt was Porsche Cars Great Britain technician Richard Payne.
"We don't usually go this far to test the limits of our cars but I think today we got pretty close," said Payne after the stunt. "Our cars can go a bit beyond what our customers might expect--they're designed to be tough...Credit should go to the team in Stuttgart who developed the car--they did a thorough job."
Also impressed was Pravin Patel, an adjudicator from Guinness World Records who oversaw the stunt. "I've verified some amazing record attempts--watching a Porsche Cayenne tow one of the largest aircraft in the world definitely ranks as among the most spectacular."
