Porsche Design turns 50, reveals 2 special-edition cars and exclusive timepieces

This year, Porsche’s accessories subsidiary, Porsche Design, celebrates its 50th anniversary. The German product design studio was founded in 1972 and faithfully follows FA Porsche’s “good design must be honest” philosophy.

    The former is based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS and features special aesthetic elements inspired by the first product his new company designed: the Chronograph 1.

    Outside, the 2022 Porsche 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design features 20/21-inch center-locking 911 Turbo S wheels, a Targa bar, and "PORSCHE DESIGN" logos on the doors finished in Satin Platinum. Its brake calipers, on the other hand, are finished in high gloss black. A special “50 Years Porsche Design” badge adorns the engine grille.

    Its interior also features several special touches including a silver, numbered badge on the dashboard trim as well as Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s signature on the car’s center console lid. The seats are covered in Sport-Tex material with a checked pattern in Black and Cool Gray. while its headrests are embossed with the “50 Years Porsche Design” logo. Its GT Sport steering wheel also features a Slate Gray center marker.

    The Porsche 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design comes with 18-way Adaptive Sport Seats Plus, seat belts in Slate Grey, and the Sport Chrono Package with Porsche Design Subsecond Clock.

    Power will come from a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo flat-six mill that makes 473 horses. The engine can be mated to either an eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission or a seven-speed manual tranny.

    Porsche says that the 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design will only be produced in 750 units and is expected to begin arriving in US dealers in Spring (from March to June).

    Meanwhile, the restored 911 S 2.4 Targa features anodized Fuchs rims, a Platinum satin-finished Targa roll bar, and a special “Porsche Design 50th Anniversary” badge on the engine grille with a reproduction of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche's signature.

    Inside, the 911 S 2.4 Targa features checkered Sport-Tex fabric in Black and Cool Gray combination on the door trims, the central section of the seats, and the lower section of the dashboard. A “Porsche Design 50th Anniversary” badge can be found on the passenger side as well as on the vehicle document folder and tool bag.

    Completing the factory restoration project is a presentation box containing detailed vehicle documentation, a key pouch, which is an FA Porsche original, and a model of the restored vehicle.

    Buried under the bonnet is an upgraded engine and chassis, thanks to the Porsche Classic experts who worked on the restoration project.

    In addition to the two special-edition cars, Porsche Design also announced two new timepieces: the Chronograph 1 — 911 50 Years of Porsche Design and the Chronograph 1 — 1972 Limited Edition.

    The former is an accompanying accessory to the new 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design and includes a sapphire crystal case back to reveal a winding rotor that shares its design with the wheel of the special edition 911. This version of the watch is also engraved with the same number out of 750 as its corresponding vehicle.

    The latter is limited to 500 units worldwide and is available for customer purchase individually. This version of the watch remains completely unchanged from the original in terms of size and design and features a solid titanium case back with the historic Porsche Design logo.

    Finally, the Porsche Museum is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Porsche Design with a special exhibition that will run until 11 July 2022. Part of it will feature information on the life of F.A. Porsche, his design philosophy, and his huge creative influence. Exhibits spanning five decades and many product ranges will also be on display according to the German automotive brand.
