Porsche Latin America and Porsche Mexico have commissioned a special Porsche 911 Turbo S to honor the life and death of one of the most successful Mexican racing drivers, Pedro Rodriguez.
Rodriguez’s most notable racing accolades include two Formula One Grand Prix wins, a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and four triumphs in the 24 Hours of Daytona. During his illustrious career in racing, Rodriguez won 11 titles in the World Championship of Makes — now called the World Endurance Championship (WEC) — and helped Porsche win the series in 1970 and 1971.
The Mexican won eight of these 11 titles behind the wheel of the Porsche 917 KH with the distinctive Gulf Oil livery.
It has been 50 years since Rodriguez lost his life at the Norisring street circuit in Nuremberg, Germany on July 11, 1971. And to commemorate his legacy, Porsche has built the 911 Turbo S “One of a Kind” Pedro Rodriguez.
The car was unveiled at the recently held Sportscar Together Day at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento Pegaso, in Toluca, Mexico.
“Pedro Rodríguez continues to be the Latin American driver who has given Porsche the most triumphs and joy," said Porsche Latin America President and CEO George Wills.
Wills added, "With this unique car in the world we want to pay tribute to a unique, irreplaceable driver — an idol of the past and a legend of today."
The One of a Kind was made with distinct designs and details. Porsche Latin America and Porsche Mexico worked alongside Rodríguez’s family and the Porsche Museum to craft a car that does not only pay tribute to the Mexican legend but will also give a nod to the 917 KH with which he achieved glory.
“This car has unique elements that no other car in the world could have. This configuration, with these specific details and equipment, has been locked in the Porsche configurator, as well as in the production system so that this car is literally unrepeatable,” explained Porsche Mexico Director Camilo San Martin.
Porsche painted the One of a Kind in iconic Gulf blue with an orange stripe. The doors feature a black “number two” in a white circle. The 911 Turbo S-based commission rides on specially designed wheels that are painted in high-gloss black with an aluminum center lock.
A plaque is placed on the B-pillar bearing the silhouette of the 917 KH in the colors of the Mexican flag and the name and signature of Rodriguez. The same detail is found on the carbon moldings of the lower door frames which illuminate when opened. The rear spoiler features an engraving of the names of the eight races he won with the 917 KH.
Inside, the One of a Kind features fully-upholstered seats finished in graphite blue leather with orange stitching. The 917 silhouettes are sewn on the headrests of the front seats while Rodriguez’s signature is placed on the center armrest and on the carbon fiber dashboard trim.
The keys of the One of a Kind are painted in Gulf blue to match the car’s paint and features the signature of the two-time world endurance champion. The car also includes bespoke luggage set in graphite blue leather with orange stitching and details.
The Porsche 911 Turbo S "One of a Kind" Pedro Rodriguez will be auctioned off later this year, said the German carmaker.
