Porsche Introduces Holoride to Keep Backseat Drivers Preoccupied
Porsche is bringing virtual reality (VR) gaming to its cars with the introduction of Holoride technology. Unveiled at the Startup Autobahn Expo Day this Tuesday, July 16, Porsche and Holoride seek to show what the future of car entertainment can look like.
The goal of Holoride--which provides backseat passengers with VR goggles to wear--is "to give passengers the opportunity of immersing themselves in virtual entertainment worlds," according to Porsche.
The technology syncs up with the motions of the vehicle so that the goggles can adapt to the car's driving movements in real time. Syncing VR to the real world results in a highly immersive experience, which can help address motion sickness in passengers.
Future versions of the tech will see Holoride evaluate navigation data and adapt the length of the VR game to the calculated version of the trip. It may also be integrated with other entertainment services including film and music--even video conferences to allow passengers to work remotely in the backseat.
"We are grateful to Startup Autobahn for the many opportunities and contacts it has made possible for us," claims Nils Wollny, CEO of Holoride. "This has given our projects a major boost in recent weeks, enabling us to realize a prototype in just 100 days."
Holoride makes elastic content possible--one that's especially designed for use in vehicles and adapts to motion, driving time and context. The makers of the tech claims that it's an open platform approach, which allows other car manufacturers and content producers to use the VR system. In fact, Audi has a similar system in its cars.
