Porsche AG made a huge splash at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week when it revealed the latest version of its 911 sports car. The release marks the beginning of the eighth generation of the vehicle that put the Porsche name on the map. The all-new 911, codenamed 992, is the most advanced yet, but despite the extensive digital features, remains to be the pure sports car it’s always known to be.
Imbued with the Porsche DNA, the new 911 boasts a beefed up appearance, but the biggest changes are in the electronics. Beginning with the 10.9-inch touchscreen, intelligent control and chassis elements combine with innovative driver assistance systems to usher the iconic speedster to the future.
"The 8th generation of the 911 is even more powerful, even more emotional, and even more efficient than its predecessor--and also offers extensive digital features," comments Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. "And in spite of all the innovations, the 911 is still just what it has always been: a pure sports car and the pulsing heart of Porsche: our icon."
The next generation of flat-six turbocharged engines have been tweaked to be more powerful than ever, with the S models able to generate a whopping 450 hp. An updated injection process combined with a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system yields improved drive efficiency. With a newly developed 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, top speed for the Carrera S is now at 308 kph, while the Carrera 4S is at 306 kph.
To enhance the 911’s safety, Porsche introduces the Porsche Wet mode to make driving on wet roads safer. Also included is a Night Vision Assist feature with thermal imaging camera to allow drivers to see even when there are no lamps on the road.
Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, expressed how important US automotive market is to the German sports car manufacturer: "More than 55,000 Porsches were delivered to the USA in 2017, and our American sales company Porsche Cars North America is on track to achieve a new record figure in 2018. Ultimately, no model better symbolizes the American love affair with Porsche than the 911. One in three Porsche 911s built in Zuffenhausen goes to the USA."
