Porsche had to sift through parts lists and technical information in the company archive, as well as interview former and current staff about design details to get the right data for this magnesium crankcase. This means that Porsche 911 F and G series with 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, and 2.7-liter engines can get new crankcases built by the brand. The German carmaker admitted that until now, repairs for these parts have either had to involve trying to weld minor cracks or resorting to re-using secondhand parts from old engines.
To build these magnesium crankcases, Porsche had to sift through parts lists and technical information in the company archive, as well as interview former and current staff about design details.
The Stuttgart-based brand used the historic data it gathered and married it with modern computer-aided systems. The appropriate molds, the carmaker explained, are produced in a plant and the cores are made from sand, bonded with resin.
The products are then machined on a five-axis computerized numerical control unit, which uses more than 50 different cutting, drilling, and milling tools.
“This reissue closes another gap in our range of spare parts, making it possible to build completely new engines for most classic 911 models. There’s a lot of demand from our customers for true-to-original engine components like this,” said Porsche Classic Director Ulrike Lutz.
Per the carmaker, the magnesium crankcase is only a part of its ever-growing catalog of dated parts and accessories, which can be ordered through Porsche Classic.
