Porsche’s future sports cars will use carbon dioxide (CO2)-reduced steel by 2026, the carmaker announced.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What company did Porsche partner with to get CO2-reduced steel?

Per Porsche, it partnered with Swedish energy start-up H2 Green Steel.
  • How much CO2 emissions reduction does H2 Green Steel's products boast over conventional automotive steel?

To achieve a reduced CO2 composition, the Stuttgart-headquartered brand said that H2 Green Steel uses an innovative production process with hydrogen and electricity from renewable energy sources.

As a result, the produced steel — Porsche pointed out — is almost CO2-free. Compared to conventional steel, the ones produced by H2 Green Steel generate 95 percent less CO2 emissions.

“Porsche is working towards a carbon-neutral balance sheet across the value chain for its cars by 2030. CO₂-reduced steel plays a key role in our sustainability strategy. With the steel from H2 Green Steel, we aim to further reduce the CO₂ emissions caused by this important material,” explained Porsche Executive Board Member for Procurement Barbara Frenkel.

In recent years, Porsche has been continuously reducing the proportion of steel in its products. In contrast, the company is increasingly relying on aluminum.

However, steel remains one of the key elements in sports car construction, however, due to its excellent mechanical properties.

“Energy, processes, and materials account for a significant share of CO₂ emissions in the supply chain. That is why we want to increase the use of recycled materials and green electricity in the production processes of direct suppliers as part of our decarbonization efforts,” Frenkel noted.
