The Proton X90 has achieved a five-star rating from the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP).
According to the organization, the Proton X90 obtained a total score of 83.75 points in the assessment. The total score — the institution pointed out — was based on the cumulative points of the four assessment categories under the ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol, namely Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Safety Assist, and Motorcyclist Safety.
To note, Proton is a Malaysian car brand, which Zhejiang Geely Holding Group owns 49.9 percent of. Considered the close relative of the Geely Okavango, the Proton X90 dons different cosmetic features but shares the same core components with its Philippine-market cousin.
They are both powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. However, the Malaysian Proton X90 makes a little less power at around 175 horsepower (hp) while the locally available Geely Okavango makes about 190hp.
Per the ASEAN NCAP, the Proton X90 was able to score 37.75 points, 17.79 points, 15.71 points, and 12.50 points in the abovementioned categories respectively.
“The Proton X90 is the 10th model under the Proton brand that was assessed by ASEAN NCAP. The SUV has made an exceptional performance in this assessment in which it not only offers better protection for its occupants, but also ensures the safety of other road users by offering a number of key safety technologies that are able to prevent the risk of road crashes from occurring. ASEAN NCAP extends our congratulations to the Proton team for successfully achieving a five-star rating for their new SUV model in their X-series line-up. With the previous Proton SUVs had received five-star rating, the new X90 that was assessed under the more stringent ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 protocol has indeed proven Proton’s commitment to safety,” ASEAN NCAP wrote in a press release.
The Proton X90 offers safety features such as electronic stability control, an anti-lock braking system, a seatbelt reminder system for both frontal and rear seat occupants, blind spot detection for both sides of the vehicle, child presence detection, and pedestrian protection technology.
It also comes with advanced safety-assist technologies such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) City, AEB Inter-Urban, and AEB Pedestrian; lane keep assist, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, emergency lane keep assist, traffic sign information, and rear collision warning.
