Ram announced that it will officially end the production of its diesel-powered 1500 truck by January of next year. After which, the iconic truck brand will transition to become an all-electric marque, marking the end of an era.
With such, Stellantis-owned brand is giving its customers a final chance to own the V6-powered 1500 EcoDiesel truck before it’s gone.
“Our Ram EcoDiesel V6 engine has delighted consumers with the highest half-ton diesel torque rating and towing capability while being the first to exceed 1,000 miles of range. As we quickly pivot toward an electrified future, we wanted to celebrate this last EcoDiesel milestone by offering our loyal light-duty diesel enthusiasts a final opportunity to order the truck they love,” said Ram Brand Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mike Koval Jr.
The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 powerplant fitted under the hood of the Ram 1500 truck was introduced in 2014. Through it, Ram customers were able to enjoy class-leading fuel economy and range, along with torque that was unsurpassed by any full-size truck with a V6 engine.
The EcoDiesel V6-powered 2014 Ram 1500 earned a 28 miles per gallon (mpg) — about 11.9 kilometers per liter (kpl) — rating from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and was considered the best highway-cycle test result ever achieved by a half-ton, full-size pickup. It also exceeded the EPA highway rating for the top-ranked midsize pickup.
According to Ram, the 1500 EcoDiesel pickup truck’s impressive EPA rating was one of the reasons for the nameplate's commercial success. Ram sold more than 8,000 trucks equipped with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine in the first 72 hours.
In 2020, Ram updated the EcoDiesel V6 engine under the 1500’s hood. The update helped make the 2020 Ram 1500 become America’s most powerful half-ton diesel pickup (with 653Nm of torque) and the most capable light-duty diesel truck (thanks to a towing capacity of as much as to 12,560 pounds).
The new-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine reinforced Ram Truck’s commitment to powertrain leadership and led the segment in fuel economy. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 4x2 scored an EPA rating of 32mpg (13.6kpl) on the highway while its 4x4 counterpart clocked in at 29mpg (12.3 kpl) on the highway.
Per Ram, the Michigan-based automotive brand will offer a 1500 battery-electric vehicle (BEV) pickup truck in 2024. In addition, Ram will have a full portfolio of electrified solutions in the majority of its segments by 2025 and in all segments by 2030.
