The local motorsport scene will be set ablaze again this weekend as Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) kicks off this year’s 2021 Toyota GR Vios Cup on Saturday, July 10.
This year’s one-make race series, now headlined by the Japanese carmaker’s global motorsports brand Toyota Gazoo Racing, “promises to deliver racing action to more fans” after its break last year due to the restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, for the safety of everyone, access to the race venue (Clark International Speedway) will be restricted to the participants.
For those who want to watch the races, they can experience the waku-doki level of excitement online via the Facebook pages of Toyota Motor Philippines and Toyota Gazoo Racing PH.
“On top of the full coverage of the races, online fans can also expect more exciting games, activities, and heart-racing fun together with their favorite racers,” TMP said in its statement.
As announced by fuel partner Petron, the 2021 Toyota GR Vios Cup will have two racing events: the Circuit Championship and the Autocross Challenge.
The Circuit Championship features the classic format, with drivers racing against each other in their respective race classes.
“The return of the Super Sporting Class in the Circuit Championship marks the comeback of seasoned local racing stars on the Vios Cup track with 2019 Sporting Class Champion Red Diwa joining the Super Sporting Class this season. Dealer teams Obengers Racing Team, R Racing, and JBT Racing will also be joining the track action this weekend,” TMP shared.
Aside from Super Sporting, the circuit race will also have a Sporting Class and Promotional Class. A total of 24 racers will be at the grid for the first leg.
Viewers may also root for their favorite celebrity racers such as Daniel Matsunaga, Troy Montero and Fabio Ide, who will now race against other entrants in the Promotional Class.
Meanwhile, the Autocross Challenge, will be welcoming 24 competitors – 12 media participants and 12 personalities composed of Winwyn Marquez, Laura Lehmann, Carla Lizardo, Alex Diaz, Arron Villaflor, John Manalo, Gab Lagman, Jacq Yu, Lexi Mendiola, Jules Aquino, Bianca Yao and Gino Quillamor under Team Toyota Gazoo Racing PH. Joining the Autocross Challenge for Carbay Philippines are Dylan Afuang (Carmudi) and Roy Robles (ZigWheels).
