Young rider Alfred Jakob Sablaya finished at the top of the podium twice at the Motul Carrera Grande 2021.
During the competition held last December 19 at the Tarlac Circuit Hill racetrack, the 16-year-old product of the Honda Pilipinas Dream Cup Program bested 13 other competitors in the Backbone category onboard the all-new Honda CBR150R and 14 participants in the 150 Underbone Street Legal class using the Supra GTR 150.
Sablaya was sponsored by Honda Philippines Inc. (HPI) in the said annual motorcycle racing event held every December.
In a statement, HPI Motorcycle Planning Department Manager Hervic Villa said that they have chosen the two models for Sablaya to use in the races as those are “powerful, fast, and competitive bikes.”
“More importantly, we believe in Jakob Sablaya’s talent and his determination to win this event despite the challenges brought by the pandemic,” Villa added.
Sablaya’s father, Honorato “Noni” Sablaya — who coached the promising young rider — said that despite facing numerous ordeals for not competing in a while due to COVID-19 pandemic, the young prodigy remained courageous and strong-willed in competing in the event.
“We would like to congratulate our young rider for this amazing triumph. We hope that you continue to excel to become the rider you hope to be in the future. We are looking forward to your future endeavors as a motorcycle racer,” he said.
Organized by Sonic Boom Motorsports, the Motul Carrera Grande 2021 is authorized by the National Motorcycle Sports and Safety Association (NAMSSA), a certified body of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). It is an organization that sanctions World Championship races, which include MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 and ARRC.
Aside from the categories which Sablaya has championed in, the racing event has six other classes namely the 160 Automatic (Open rider); 150 Underbone (Open rider); 160 Automatic (Beginner/Novice); 130 Underbone (Open rider); 150 Underbone (Beginner/Novice); and SuperMoto.
Meanwhile, Sablaya is expected to compete on the racetrack next year at the Inside RACING Grand Prix (IRGP) from January 21 to 23.
