Samuel L. Jackson Coming Soon to Your GM Car to Assist You MFs
Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson, along with a host of other celebrities, are lending their voice for Amazon's virtual assistant Alexa later this year, the tech company announced on Wednesday, September 25.
The voice assistant will also be made available to General Motors (GM) vehicle models from 2018 onward starting next year. With Alexa, GM car owners will be able to control navigation, stream media, and operate their phones hands-free while driving.
GM is the owner of Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC branded cars.
The agreement allows Amazon to expand its Alexa franchise and access millions of vehicles, which plays into Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos' strategy to carve a niche in the transportation market.
Aside from GM, Alexa is also available to other car models via the Amazon Echo Auto app.
For GM, the partnership with Amazon is its latest effort to incorporate mass-appeal technologies into its vehicles. For years, GM and other carmakers tried and failed to develop in-house infotainment systems. GM hopes to overcome this dilemma by embracing widely accepted digital assistants such as Alexa, Apple’s Siri, or Google Voice.
GM vehicle owners may download the Alexa app to their vehicles beginning the first half of 2020, according to the car brand.
Jackson is the only celebrity voice announced so far, with Amazon assuring that many more will follow. Here's hoping that the Samuel Jackson Voice Assistant comes with the profanity-laden salvos he's known for.
