SFEX capacity expansion project now at 85 percent
The NLEX Corporation announced that the Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX) Capacity Expansion Project is close to completion.
Following the latest inspection led by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar, the SFEX Expansion is now at 85 percent completion.
Joining Villar in the recent inspection were DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller Tolentino, NLEX Corporation Chief Operating Officer Raul Ignacio, and Vice President for Tollway Development and Engineering Nemesio Castillo.
One of the main features of the SFEX Capacity Expansion project is the new tunnel that connects Bataan and Zambales.
The capacity expansion project for the 8.2-kilometer SFEX is targeted to reduce congestion to and from the Subic Bay Freeport Zone as well as increase traffic safety measures.
The road project will have new bridges and a tunnel adjacent to the existing ones to increase road capacity from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction. Further, the said stretch will also have expressway-standard LED lights.
Earlier, the NLEX Corporation said that the completion of the project is rescheduled to the end of this year—an extension of at least three months from its initial schedule set back in 2019.
