Last July,
Sojitz G Auto Phillippines (SGAP) was
officially appointed as the importer and distributor of Geely cars in the Philippines. And yesterday, September 25, SGAP formally celebrated the launch of the Geely brand locally by introducing its very first model to the Philippine market: the
Geely Coolray compact crossover.
This is Geely's second time to enter the Philippine market. The first time was in 2011 when it was launched at the Manila International Auto Show, with its distribution being handled then by AutoChina, Inc..

As mentioned, the Geely Coolray is a
compact crossover that comes in
three trims, though all three utilize the same
1.5-liter G-Power turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline direct-injection engine with
dual variable valve timing that puts out
175 hp and 255 Nm of torque through a
seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to give it a zero to 100 kph sprint time of
7.9 seconds.
The Coolray is Geely's first crossover to be based on its new
B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) platform, which was first utilized last year in the Geely Binrui compact sedan. Developed in partnership with
Volvo--which Geely acquired from Ford in 2010--with the assistance of
100 modular architecture experts from
over 20 countries, the BMA platform was designed to exceed the criteria required to achieve a
five-star Euro New Car Assessment Program safety rating.

The Coolray was designed on the concept
'Racing through Space and Time' to make it "Geely's high-performance global market-oriented vehicle full of energy, confidence, and strength." And it certainly looks the part as the
range-topping Sport variant has a
Piano Black roof with a
panoramic sunroof and
carbon fiber trims on the front spoiler and rear diffuser. It also rides on class-leading
18-inch wheels along with the
Premium variant while the
entry-level Comfort trim is fitted with
17-inch wheels.
For its interior, the Coolray has a
seven-inch LED display for its gauge cluster and a
10.25-inch multimedia touch-screen with
QD-link Android connectivity function to make it "easier to operate apps from your phone to the multimedia screen, letting drivers to focus on driving."
Other features include a
Tire Pressure Monitoring System which provides the pressure and temperature of all four tires in real-time, and a
Remote Start that lets owners turn on the engine and air-conditioning system to cool the cabin, especially if the vehicle is parked outside.
The Coolray is also equipped with the latest technology and advanced safety features found only on midsized and luxury SUVs. Apart from the standard
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with
Electronic Brake Distribution, the Coolray is equipped with
Brake Assist,
Electronic Stability and Traction Control,
Hill Start Assist,
Hill Descent Control, and
Cruise Control.
For its class and price point though, the Coolray stands out for its
G-Pilot system that helps to drive with ease. It includes the
Auto Parking Assist system which lets you do parallel and perpendicular parking with a touch of a button, and
four exterior cameras to give the driver a
360-degree view of the car.
As mentioned earlier, the Coolray is available in three variants and pricing will be as follows:
Geely Coolray Sport -
PHP1.198 million
Geely Coolray Premium -
PHP1.088 million
Geely Coolray Comfort -
PHP978,000
As an added bonus, for a limited time, the Geely Coolray is being offered with a
discount of up to PHP100,000 off,
Geely PH Marketing Services Section Manager Ryan Isana told CARMUDI PHILIPPINES.
The Geely Coolray is available for inspection--and for sale--at the
Geely North EDSA showroom which, incidentally, is opening its doors today.
