SsangYong Korando e-Motion EV SUV, J100 EV to be launched next year
As part of the SsangYong Motors robust set of self-help measures after finding itself in deep water after Mahindra refused to continue investing in its operations, the South Korean SUV specialist looks to turn things around by accelerating its new car development program.
The carmaker announced its full-scale move towards renewing the industry’s confidence in the brand through an intensive restructuring of the business and a focus on meeting fast-changing automotive trends.
SsangYong says that the first tangible result in its plans to revive the brand is to release the company’s first electric vehicle.
Developed under the project name E100, the new EV SUV went into full-scale production on June 14 and will be released as the “Korando e-Motion” — a name that the carmaker says “would work well in overseas markets.”
According to SsangYong, the Korando e-Motion will be the first midsize EV SUV to be released in Korea.
The Korando e-Motion will be made available by August 2021 in Europe and in the UK the following year.
In addition, SsangYong also announced another EV under the project name J100. The launch of the J100 is scheduled for 2022.
“We are establishing a strong foothold for corporate rehabilitation through a successful M&A and putting our very best efforts into new car development by addressing the rapidly changing automotive trends. In addition, we are expanding the line-up of eco-cars, discovering future growth opportunities such as new business models, and preparing for renewed competitiveness,” said SsangYong Motors Receiver Yong Won Chung.
Aside from the aforementioned, launch dates details about both EVs are still to be announced.
