Toyota announced recently that the manual transmission-equipped Toyota GR Supra is now available in the United States (US).
The Japanese automaker's US arm shared that the new six-speed manual transmission will be available on the Toyota GR Supra 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and the limited-edition 3.0 A91-MT.
“When we revealed the GR Supra back in 2019, we tapped into a heritage nameplate for Toyota. But we were regularly asked if there would be a manual version. We immediately took that feedback to heart and started developing it, and we’re happy that we can now bring customers the perfect complement for Supra’s high-torque, high output engine with a six-speed manual,” said Toyota Vehicle Marketing and Communications Vice President Mike Tripp.
At launch, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra was offered with a straight-six 3.0-liter engine with 335 horsepower (hp) with around 495Nm of torque matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. In 2021, the GR team increased the 3.0 Toyota GR Supra’s maximum power output to 382 horses with 497Nm of torque and introduced a turbocharged four-cylinder Toyota GR Supra 2.0 with 255 horsepower and a stout 400Nm of torque.
While the car and its performance have received high praise worldwide, inevitably, the question of whether a manual gearbox would be available persisted.
The 2023 Toyota GR Supra's manual gearbox was developed by Gazoo Racing engineers in cooperation with Toyota Motor Europe and ZF, a German transmission brand. The aforementioned component is said to have been built with components designed specifically to suit the power and torque characteristics of the 2023 Toyota GR Supra’s 3.0-liter straight-six engine.
According to the Japanese automotive brand, the engineering team combined an existing transmission housing and gear set, developed a new shift lever, and removed elements that were not required — such as the acoustic package — which reduced weight, to bring the manual transmission-equipped Toyota GR Supra to 3,389 pounds or about 1,537 kilograms (kg).
The manual gearbox also features an Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) programmed with new software that prioritizes sporty performance. When upshifting, the parameters are tuned to optimize engine torque at the moment of clutch engagement and release; on downshifts, the software includes rev-matching for consistent performance. The iMT is set as the default, but, if the driver prefers, can be switched off.
To support take-off, the final drive ratio has been shortened, from 3.15 (in the automatic transmission-equipped Toyota GR Supra) to 3.46 (in the manual transmission-equipped Toyota GR Supra). The result, as explained by the Aichi-based marque, is response and gearing appropriate for sports car performance.
Other adjustments were made outside of the gearbox to ensure that the manual transmission can be accommodated in the driver’s cockpit. The lever ratio was specifically set to minimize the effort required to make shifts and engage reverse gear. In addition, the console unit and position of the drive mode selector were adjusted to provide a 1.7-inch clearance between the shift knob and the control panel.
The manual transmission-equipped 2023 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 is priced at $52,500 (around P2.9 million at today’s conversion rates) while the 2023 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Premium with the same manual transmission is priced at $55,650 (about P3.1 million). As for the limited-edition 2023 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 A91-MT, the price is US$58,945 (around P3.3 million). US customers will also be charged with a US$1,095 (P62,416) dealer processing and handling fee.
