Subaru Halts Production Over Defective Part

Subaru Corp. announced that it put a temporary stop to production at its lone vehicle factory in Japan after it discovered a possible defect in a power-steering component procured from a supplier.

The production stoppage, which began on the nightshift of January 16, could end on Monday at the earliest, and two weeks at most, according to the company’s representatives.

Subaru’s Japanese factory accounts for around 60 percent of global production.

The possible defect affected only the Impreza, Forester,and XV models. However, the rest of the production processes has been stopped because they are part of the same assembly line, the company said.

The Japanese car brand is still pinpointing the exact location of the defect. Likewise, Subaru said it does not yet know how the production halt would impact its earnings.

Subaru is also investigating if its plant in Indiana has also been compromised, although production there continues as investigators look into the matter.

The Japanese plant and the Indiana plant are Subaru’s only two factories worldwide.
